Skills Camp, Inc was started as a one week basketball camp
by Terrell Myers and Shawon Moncrief in 2001. There was
an enrollment of 22 campers, most being family and friends
to Shawon and Terrell. The following year they extended
the basketball camp to 2 weeks out of the summer and approximately
35 kids attended each week. In 2003 they pressed their luck
once again and added yet another week, bringing the total
to 3 weeks for the summer with over 50 campers per week.
In 2004, Skills Camp added an
educational enrichment segment for one hour per day. It
included 2 teachers that instructed students in various
school subjects. In addition to the enrichment program they
also added 3 additional weeks of camp to the summer program
and averaged close to 100 campers per week. That same year
a travel team was added for grades 8-10 with 30 participants.
Today, Skills Camp averages over 100 campers per week for
the summer camp and now offers camps during school vacations.
The travel teams are still going strong and are in high demand
around the state by a number of high school and middle school
players. The quality of play we have established and the
SAT preparation we offer to our teams has increased demand
among youth.
We launched our pilot
After-School Program in the fall of 2007 that has been well received and is
very popular among students at Troup Magnet Academy of Science
in New Haven. The students receive homework help, Connecticut
Mastery Test preparation and educational enrichment programs. In the future, Skills Camp will elevate to even
higher levels of opportunity by providing more programs
for our youth.
"Keep an eye out for
us as we continue to shape and inspire youngsters to well-rounded
adults."
