Community Broadcast Going Strong

The Community Broadcast, currently held Tuesdays and Wednesday from 3 - 5 PM at Troup, is moving along well with positive feedback from the community. This program teaches students how to create their own TV show, star in a TV show, film, edit, and do all that is necessary to get their show live on TV. It's an incredible experience for any student and the skills that are learned are transferable to many careers. If you are interested in signing up, contact Shawon at 435.6201. Summer sessions will also be held.

A major upset and some impressive individual performances were among the highlights on Friday at the Hoop Hall Summer Classic.

Connecticut Skills scored the biggest upset of the day as they knocked off Hollis Price Elite in convincing fashion. Markus Wright and Jordan Dina formed an imposing interior tandem as Wright’s explosive power and athleticism allowed him to finish several plays with authority while the 6’6” Dina showed his well balanced game as he made bouncy plays around the rim, led the break, and even knocked down a couple of three-pointers. But the key to the Skills victory may have been the stabilizing play of point guard Sam Markle, who was on loan from the Connecticut Gold squad. As always Markle did a nice job of running the team, distributing the ball, and controlling the tempo of the game.

Registration is Open for Holiday Tournament

New Haven-based Skills Camp is offering a Holiday Basketball Tournament on December 27 -28, 2007 for boys in grades 6 through 8. The location and schedule will be released on December 24^th, a day after registration forms are due. The cost per team is $250 and teams can purchase their registration online at www.skillscamp.net. The event schedule will also be posted on the website and mailed to registrants.

Executive Director Shawon Moncrief said, There was overwhelming support from our campers to hold a tournament this holiday season and we are excited to have been able to put this together. Once we tally the responses, we’ll determine a suitable location to hold this annual event.

The next Skills Camp tournament, March Madness, is scheduled for March 24 through 28, 2008 for boys 17 and under. Early registration is available online at a reduced rate.

Skills Camp, Inc. is designed to develop various life skills in children through basketball. The camp's programs seek to enhance self esteem, raise community awareness and teach discipline, goal creation, healthy living and teamwork. The program is open to all students and is based in the New Haven area with an expansion planned into Hartford.

Skills Camp 82 vs. Pottstown Panthers 74

We Started the game very well leading the game 10-0 But Pottstown clawed back to tie the game 10-10. The game seemed to go back and fourth until the thunderous and 1 dunk by K DUB! The score at halftime 48-42 Skills Camp. The Panthers were lead by two very good players Mike “smooth” Williams and Chris Humpreys. Humpreys may be joining the skills camp in Las Vegas for the Main Event Tournament.

In the second half the game was very tight with skills camp always 1 or 2 points ahead but as the game begin to wind down skills camp ran away with a 14 point lead behind the great shooting of Chazz McCarter. During the game we had some players receive some great Nick Names such as “Animal” aka Marcus Wright, “The Safety” Chris McKinney, Agent Zero aka Kendall and The Shooter aka Chazz McCarter. Chazz also finished the game with 22 points and walked away with the game MVP. The coach of Skills Camp Terrell Myers walked away with the 3 point crown making 15 shots in a minute.

Question and Answer with Chris Cagle

Chris Cagle is a graduate and former player of the Hillhouse High school back to back state championship team. Chris averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds a game. Next year he will be attending New Hampshire University. Currently Chris plays for our High school AAU team. Chris has qualified academically and that’s what we are most proud of at skills camp.

1. What are your plans for the future? My plans are to finish four years of college and to get my teachers degree. In Gods will pursue my basketball career.

2. Are there any regrets from your senior season? I don’t have any regrets for my senior season I thought it went pretty well.

3. What championship means more to you ? I believe the second championship meant more. Last year playing with my team mates and brothers meant the world to me and also it was also my second Championship in to years.

4. What is the first thing you think about when you wake up? What does God have planed for me today.

5. At what age did you begin to play basketball? I began to play organize basketball at the age of ten but I did not take the game serious until I was fourteen.

6. What team was better? I think the 05/06 team was better because we had more team chemistry.
7. What is the best player you have ever played against ? The best player I played against yet had to be Jarred Bayless.

8. What is the best and worst part of your game? The best part of my game is my defense. As far as my worst part ill have to say dribbling.

9. What advice would you give young kids reading this article? My best advice to the kids is to keep their heads in the books and stay motivated and pursue their dreams and don’t let anyone tell you cant make it in life.

10. If you could wish for one thing in this world what would it be? If I could wish for one thing it would be for my family to be together again.
